There’s an Issue!
But hey! There’s a point to ponder upon here. Amidst all the festivities and cheers, there’s one serious concern here. This impacts locals as well as tourists who prefer to drive down to these festive spots – and that is the issue of parking.
The whole city – and people from neighboring emirates – flocks to the hotspots to enjoy the New Year’s Eve festivities & fireworks. A large number of them come by their own cars – and this creates some serious parking issues.
It’s a matter of serious concern for the authorities to ensure smooth flow of traffic on a day like December 31st. It’s also a challenge for them to ensure that so many cars are parked in a proper manner, without hassles.
Steps Need to be Taken
Yes, absolutely. There’s a limit up to which cars can be parked at a certain spot. And there’s also a limit as to how much traffic can be allowed on certain key roads – and till when. Keeping these issues in mind, the Dubai authorities have issued certain instructions & guidelines on these matters. Read on to know more about a guide to traffic and parking in Dubai during New Year.
Road Closures in Dubai – Downtown Dubai
Burj Khalifa in Downtown Dubai hosts the most magnificent New Year’s Eve celebrations. So, the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) Dubai will be closing some roads in this district on December 31st as per the following schedule:
- Sheikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Boulevard will close at 4:00 p.m.
- Al Mustaqbal Street will close at 4:00 p.m.
- Al Sayel Street will close at 4:00 p.m.
- Burj Khalifa Street will close at 4:00 p.m.
- The Financial Center Street (lower deck) will close at 4:00 p.m.
- The Financial Center Street (upper deck) will close at 9:00 p.m.

The road closures are taken off usually by 2:00 a.m. on January 1, subject to approvals from Dubai Police & RTA. So, guests intending to put up in hotels in this location or having dinner at any eatery here, must arrive much beforehand.
If you are planning to enjoy your New Year’s Eve at Downtown Dubai and plan to come by your own car, then you need to arrive well within time. Dubai Mall (adjacent to Burj Khalifa) parking will be opened till there is capacity.
But please do remember – vehicles parked at all malls, eateries, hotels, and residences in the Downtown Dubai area will be allowed to leave the location only after the road closure restrictions have been lifted.
Road Closures in Dubai – Other Locations
In and around Dubai Marina and Palm Jumeirah, usually there are no hard & fast road closures that you would get to see in Downtown Dubai. However, it would be good to keep in mind the point that such restrictions might be imposed real-time – in case the traffic flow gets a bit too much to handle. So, to be on the safer side, do reach these destinations by early evening if you are driving down.
Where to Park during New Year in Dubai?
In all these locations, there are designated parking zones operated by the authorities. There are also lots of parking spaces in the shopping malls, especially the massive one at the city-sized Dubai Mall in Downtown Dubai. But you must remember one thing – these spaces are not infinite. The moment the parking is full – you would need to move on.
What About Public Transport?
Ah…now this is something which might strike a chord with you. Because, you don’t have to take the hassle of driving down on the crowded roads or bother about parking. But on this mega-festive 31st December eve, it would be worthwhile to keep some points in mind about the public transport of Dubai:
- The Burj Khalifa – Dubai Mall metro station generally closes by 4:00 p.m. on 31st December, because of the huge crowd surge in this area.
- The remaining metro lines – both Red & Green – would operate continuously from 8:00 a.m. on 31st
- The bus service would also operate as per the normal schedule – 04:00 A.M – 12:30 A.M. the next day. However, please keep in mind that the movement of Dubai buses would be synced with the road restrictions.
- Taxis in Dubai generally operate round the clock. It would be the same on 31st December evening as well. However, please keep in mind that the movement of Dubai taxis would be synced with the road restrictions.
So – it all comes down to some basic planning regarding the traffic & parking in Dubai on New Year’s Eve. Do this – and enjoy a hassle-free and magnificent New Year’s Eve festival in Dubai.
